Activision has reportedly closed Shaba Games, the developer behind last year’s PS3 and Xbox 360 versions of Spider-Man: Web Of Shadows.
Founded in September 1997, the San Francisco-based studio has also worked on a series of multiplatform Tony Hawk’s ports and Shrek titles for the publisher.
Anonymous sources informed Kotaku of the studio’s closure today, noting that around 30 employees had been let go, although the developer’s official website indicates that it employs 61 full-time staff.
Earlier this week, Activision said that another of its first party developers, the recently acquired 7 Studios, would be “reducing its workforce" to better reflect the publisher's upcoming slate of music-based games. While the company declined to comment on the number of employees affected, around 30 members of staff are believed to have been cut.
One of Kotaku’s tipsters suggested that recent cutbacks made by Activision have to do with the underwhelming performance of Guitar Hero 5 at retail.
We’ve contacted Activision and Shaba for comment.
